Your Best Year Yet
Happy New Year and welcome to 2017!
This is your year to thrive.
Growth and success in business as well as in life never come easily. The process is uncomfortable, stressful and sometimes scary. Personally, I’ve learned those powerful feelings can keep you in check but they can also hold you back if you let them. This year, let’s acknowledge them not as roadblocks, but as necessary and integral parts of the dance we call life.
One of my greatest epiphanies growing up was to realize how much our surrounding conditions shape who we are as a person. If you grew up in China, you’d likely speak Mandarin and follow Chinese traditions. Historically, if you grew up with Amazon headhunters, then you’d probably collect heads and that would be a “good” thing. You’ve probably heard the saying, “show me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are.” This is the same idea on a different scale. It’s critical learning.
We are bombarded with so much information today that it’s easy to lose sight of what’s truly important: This leads me to the question, “What is success?” What does it mean to you?
Each year, we all make New Year’s resolutions for a new start. To help you find success in 2017, we interviewed Arianna Huffington, one of the most influential women in the world, according to Time magazine. Arianna is a humble leader who’s been on her own journey of incredible success and personal growth. She has a lot of wisdom from which we can all learn.
The information shared in this edition of Change Creator magazine is powerful but only to the extent you are willing to act on it. One of the most difficult parts of any one person’s journey is the early stage of creating new habits and patterns in their life. This takes a conscious effort, planning, and persistence through times of great discomfort.
In the words of great thinkers like Gandhi and Eckhart Tolle, change starts with you. You don’t change the world around you. You change yourself. And when you do, the world around you starts to change, too.
Alan Watts, a British philosopher, writer, and speaker — best known as an interpreter and populariser of Eastern philosophy said something that changed my life. I want to share that quote as I wrap up this note:
“We thought of life by analogy as a journey, with a pilgrimage, which had a serious purpose at the end. And the thing was to get to that end. Success, or whatever it is, or maybe even heaven after you’re dead. But, we missed the point the whole way along. It was a musical thing and you were supposed to sing or to dance while the music was being played.”
Think about it for a minute and you will see this concept shine through in Arianna’s shared wisdom about success.
Right now, the song is playing and rather than focus on racing to the end, I hope you’ll start dancing.
